Working principle and function

Kingpin inclination:

The function of kingpin inclination angle is to make the wheels return to normal automatically. Generally, the wheel axis is not on the horizontal plane. For convenience, it is assumed that the wheel axis is on the horizontal plane when driving in a straight line. For the case where the wheel axis is not in the horizontal plane, just change the horizontal plane in the figure below into a conical surface. As shown in the figure below, considering the lines on the horizontal plane that intersect with the kingpin, the included angle between the kingpin and these lines has a maximum value. When the car runs in a straight line, the intersection angle between the wheel axis and the kingpin is exactly this maximum. The included angle between the wheel axis and the kingpin is constant during steering. When the wheel turns an angle, the wheel axis tilts downward away from the horizontal plane, resulting in the body lifting and the potential energy increasing. In this way, the gravity of the car itself has the effect of returning the steering wheel to the original middle position. When the vehicle is parked horizontally, in the transverse vertical plane of the vehicle, the included angle between the kingpin axis and the ground vertical line is the inclination angle of the kingpin.

Front wheel camber:

If the wheel is installed just perpendicular to the road when the vehicle is empty, the wheel inclination may occur due to load-bearing deformation of the axle when the vehicle is fully loaded, which will accelerate the wear of vehicle tires. In addition, the vertical reaction force of the road surface to the wheel along the axial component of the hub will make the hub press the small bearing at the outer end, increase the load of the small bearing at the outer end and the fastening nut of the hub, and reduce their service life. Therefore, there is a camber angle for the front wheels. However, the camber angle should not be too large, otherwise the tire will be biased and worn. As shown in the left figure, when the vehicle is parked horizontally, the included angle between the wheel plane and the vertical line on the ground in the transverse vertical plane of the vehicle is the camber angle of the front wheel.

Front toe in:

When the wheel has camber, it is similar to a rolling cone when rolling, resulting in the wheels on both sides rolling outward. Due to the restraint of the tie rod and axle, the wheel will not roll outward, and the wheel will roll inward on the ground, thus increasing the wear of the tire. In order to avoid the adverse consequences caused by conical rolling effect, the two front wheels are properly deflected inward, that is, the front wheel toe in is formed.
